It Is Finished

It is finished. Let those words ring in your ears and settle deep within your heart. Do you believe them? The last words of the Savior, claiming He had fulfilled his purpose, satisfied the wrath of God on our behalf, and paid in full the debt we owed. So, I ask myself again, do I believe those words? Then why am I still trying? Trying to earn God’s favor and keep His approval. It is finished. Why do I still believe my worth is measured by how well I perform? Jesus died because I could never measure up. On the days where I’m not enough and the days where I’m foolish enough to think that I am. It is finished. These words overwhelm me: “Who the Son sets free, he is free indeed.” (John 8:36) The Son declares our freedom! He is enough. It’s not up to me. It is finished. We are free. Freed from the penalty of death, free from the unattainable law. Free to rest in God’s forgiveness and favor. Free to come to Him! Free to say no to sin and instead free to do the works of righteousness by the Holy Spirit. It is finished! This declaration hangs in our home. It convicts me when I cheapen the gospel by adding to it my own works of righteousness, but it gives me hope. It declares the power, accessibility, and beauty of the gospel. It is finished. What an anthem to live by.
