"Come To the Well" by Emily Y.
Life, you would agree, comes with its' ups and downs. Constantly I am trying to find the next thing in my schedule that I can be excited about. I'll say to myself, "I'm happy because I don't have to go to work today" or "I can't wait to finish these next few days because I get to see my boyfriend." Maybe you're like me and have these conversations with yourself not only about the near future but also about the far future. All of us have these thoughts. What is it for you? Finish the thought, "If only____, then____." For me, the thought that keeps pestering me is, "If God would show me what I should do with my future, then everything would be perfect." As a believer in Christ, I know that this statement is not true. I know that I should have full joy in Christ no matter what; but how do I discipline myself to do this? Where can I find the answers? As I asked myself this question for the fifth time today, the Lord answered me, as He usually does, through music. I was listening to Pandora when one of my favorite songs came on. The following lines are what spoke to me: “I have what you need, but you keep on searching I've done all the work, but you keep on working When you're running on empty And you can't find the remedy Just come to the well.” I think this song is talking about the woman and the well and how she needed to be filled with Christ and not the world, but I interpreted it as God saying, “If you trust me to provide all things for you daily, then you can trust me to provide all things in your future.” God doesn’t just hand over the things that we ask for or that we think will make us happy, because He knows that He is truly the only person that can give us lasting joy. Romans 15:13 says, “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” God is our hope and our future; He is our joy and peace. If I can remind myself of this truth, then I can put away my worries for the future, and ultimately I can exchange temporary happiness for God’s joy and peace. I hope you can say this too!
